Process Benefits

The Deskins “Quick-Dry” Filtration Process is a proactive method of wastewater treatment, designed to separate solids and liquids.  Our process is proven and utilized in over 300 municipal, industrial, and agricultural facilities throughout the World and recommended by the US EPA.  Deskins “Quick Dry” Filtration Process has also been thoroughly tested in the swine industry in coordination with the USDA and North Carolina State University.

The Deskins Quick-DryÒ Dewatering System is a patented process because it is the first to integrate state of the art technologies to make dewatering on granular media an efficient, reliable, predictable, and cost effective process.

The Deskins Quick-DryÒ Process produces exceptionally dry biosolids through the controlled application of these important design factors:

Enhanced separation:  To expedite the production of dry biosolids, it is first necessary to chemically induce separation of the solids from water.  The Deskins process employs a unique polymer activation system with the patented RapidFlocÒ Mixer to optimize agglomeration and floc formation, typically resulting in processing costs of less than $10.00 per ton of dry solids (TDS).

Enhanced solids capture:  The ultimate goal of any solids management program is the removal of solids from the treatment process.  All mechanical methods of dewatering return 5-15% of the treated biosolids to the head of the plant.  The Deskins Process captures 99+% of the solids.

Enhanced drainage:  The Deskins Quick-DryÒ Filter design, which incorporates pre-saturation and the Deskins Quick-DryÒ Drainage Panels, enhances drainage by preventing compaction of the filter media, by the uniform distribution of biosolids across the surface of the filter, and by the natural development of vacuum assisted gravity drainage upon release of the impounded saturation water.  Additionally, the Deskins filter design reduces the overall depth of filter media which reduces the volume of water required to pre-saturate the media, shortens the drainage path, and reduces the volume of retained water in the media.

Enhanced drying:  The rapid drainage of water from the biosolids results in the dramatic compression and reduction of the biosolids layer captured on the surface of the granular media.  Typically, the layer of biosolids will thoroughly crack within 2-4 hours and will reach 18-24% dryness overnight.  The cracked biosolids layer more effectively absorbs the sun’s radiant energy and rapidly transpires entrapped moisture.

The AquaTracÒ series of retrieving machines are the first truly efficient means of mechanically collecting biosolids from a granular media filter.  AquaTracÒ models are selected based on the size and configuration of the filter design.

The Deskins Process can include an optional procedure for developing “Class A” biosolids through windrowing and aeration.  This additional step will increase the process costs by $3-5.00/TDS.

System Components
F D Deskins Company, Inc. offers a “PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE” for Deskins “Quick-Dry” Filtration Process™.

The Technology Components that comprise the Deskins “Quick-Dry” Filtration Process include:

Process Controller:
The controller consists of a non-contact flow meter and integrated batch controller which both indicates and totalizes flow.  When a programmed volume has been delivered to the filter, the controller will generate a signal to de-energize the sludge pump and/or close a control valve, and/or activate an alarm.
Pump Station
Moving the wastewater (influent) above ground prior to gravitational movement through the remainder of the system.  An in-ground concrete vessel containing a progressive cavity electric pump to move liquid at a constant rate slightly above ground level.
Polymer Activation Process
Integrated equipment package is provided to automatically meter, dilute, activate and feed liquid polymer and water.  Concentrated polymer and water is blended in a completely back-mixed environment.  Polymer Activation Process is flow paced with constant polymer solution delivered.
RapidFloc® Mixer (Flocculation)
The RapidFloc® Mixer is a unique in-line motorless mixing, flocculating device used to enhance chemically induced liquid-solid separation.  A cascading flow pattern with strategically placed baffles creates  unique recirculating turbulent zones of varying intensity which mix and condition the biosolids for optimum particle agglomeration.  Properly conditioned sludge will better withstand the shear forces of dewatering.
  • Reduce Polymer Usage
  • Increase Biosolid Production
  • Unit Will NOT Clog!
  • Increase Filter Holding Capacity
  • Decrease Biosolid Drying Time

"RapicFloc® Mixer" is a new type of in-line mixing-flocculating device used to enhance the chemically induced liquid-solids separation in the sludge dewatering process utilized at most wastewater treatment plants.

RapidFloc® should be installed close to filter beds.
Unit can be exposed or enclosed.

Trailer mounted Flocculation unit allows for remote storage during adverse weather conditions.

“Quick-Dry” Filtration
“Quick-Dry” Panels are an important part of the filter, made of PVC to provide integrity and strength.  Layers within the filter are constructed of a various gradations of stone for optimization of effluent (liquid) to flow away from biosolids.  When the filter is in-place the result is a flat surface with controllable drainage at ground level.  When constructed and managed properly, the Quick-Dry Filter will endure time, movement, weight, as well as provide proper rapid exiting of the liquid from the biosolid, through the filter and out using the underdrain system.  And give greater control to the discharge, seepage, and runoff of unwanted nutrients and heavy metals into the soil and groundwater.

AquaTrac Machines
Designed to retrieve and move dewatered, dried biosolids from the top surface of the filter.  (Without using the proper machinery on top of the Quick-Dry Filtration Media, the filter could bind and prevent drainage.)  These machines play an integral role in the retrieval of biosolids from the top of the
“Quick-Dry” Filter.

AquaTrac Skimmer/Loader retrieves the entire Filter with virtually no sand loss.  It also levels and prepares the Filter for the next pour.  Retrieved solids are broken into smaller or granular size particles which accelerates drying time for Class A Sludge.

** As with any system, management is paramount.  The usage of the Deskins supplied materials will be used throughout the process. No changes to the patented process will occur.

Warranty Information
